At TildaTravel we care for the whole kaleidoscope of families and that means we try our best to provide travel insurance cover for everyone.
Are you an Australian senior? Do you have a pre-existing medical condition? Or are you both of these things? Looking for the right travel insurance coverage can get complicated when travel insurers see you as an increased risk. It can be difficult to know which circumstances are covered and which are not.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over one in seven people in Australia were over 65 in 2017. This portion of the population isn’t staying at home either. According to a 2016 survey by the Australian Seniors Insurance Agency (ASIA), over 42 percent go on a holiday every year.
Australian seniors, despite being frequent travellers, may find trouble gaining full travel insurance coverage and this may be due to a perceived higher risk. Many seniors have pre-existing conditions and present a higher risk. As a general rule for Australian travel insurance, basic policies provide coverage for some pre-existing conditions including asthma, allergies, diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pregnancy.
It is a massive issue because, according to a Smart Traveller survey, 27 percent of people had pre-existing conditions in the last five years or had a hospital treatment in the last 12 months. Of those, 67 percent may be underinsured and may not even know it.
At TildaTravel, we offer coverage that is suitable for seniors and for those with pre-existing medical conditions. Our Essential, Select and Prime policies are available for those up to 100 years of age and our annual multi-trip policy, which is coming soon, will be available for those up to 75 years of age.
Travellers with pre-existing conditions of any age are able to get general coverage from TildaTravel, though there are some limits on the conditions we will cover. As long as you have not been hospitalised in the last two years, TildaTravel will cover pre-existing conditions for most people.
For some insurers, you may need to be stable for a defined period of time before accessing travel insurance. For others, you may need to undergo an assessment process or pay an additional fee. At TildaTravel, we cover many conditions automatically. It is largely dependent on your circumstances and the stability of your condition prior to gaining travel insurance.
The exclusions are on the severe end of the spectrum – when surgery is planned, you haven’t sought medical advice for the condition or don’t yet have a definitive diagnosis, you have any form of cancer, you have undergone brain or spinal surgery, you have had a seizure in the past 12 months, you have chronic or recurring pain, you have a condition that requires immunosuppressant therapy, you have HIV or an AIDS-defining illness, you have a mental illness or addiction, you have had a recent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), you have a heart or cardiovascular disease, you have a chronic lung disease, you have a terminal illness with life expectancy below 24 months, you require oxygen, you have chronic renal failure, you have had or are on the waiting list for an organ transplant or you are on blood-thinning prescription medication.
